AdWords Tutorial and Overview for Your Online Store

In this module we are going to talk about AdWords. AdWords is one of my favorite ways to get traffic to my website. It is what I have used with a lot of success for my website. We will talk about why in this lesson. This general module is all going to be about AdWords. I am really pumped about it. So, why use AdWords you might be asking yourself? The reason is “instant traffic.” There are very few if no other source of hidden traffic that provides instant traffic like AdWords or other forms of TPC do. You will want to use AdWords of you want instant traffic to your website. SEO by comparison takes a long time. If you use SEO it takes a long time for the momentum. Social media takes a long time for the momentum. Paid ads, AdWords – instantaneous.

The next reason is that you can get people who are ready to buy. The problem with some SEOs and a lot of social media traffic, especially social media, is that they are not ready to buy. They are just sort of browsing. You get the window shoppers. But with PPC, and specifically AdWords, you will get people who are ready to buy get them right from the point that they search something in Google to your website.

Another reason is you can figure out what works. There are so many reasons why you might want to use AdWords. One is that you can test it. You can see does this work? And what kind of messages do you want to give to your audience. What kind of messages work with your audience. What I mean by that is you can pick what is on the ads in AdWords. We will talk about what AdWords are in just a second. But, you can pick out what AdWords are so that you can see what works for your audience. What terms, what kind of phrases work and which ones do not.

The next thing is that AdWords provide a ton of data. This may not sound super exciting to you right now but trust me, in a few months or a year, it is going to be really exciting to have all of this data. What I mean is you can determine what is working and what is not. AdWords is an instant way of getting all that data. You could say I am advertising for this kind of a product and I am getting traffic for people searching for this particular search term, is it working or is it not.

So put a “pin” in that and we will come back to the data thing later. You will know when it is good. The more data you have, the more you can figure out what is working and what is not. Then get rid of the things that are not working and keep the things that are working.

The next reason is you might want to light a little bit of a fire under your butt. What I mean by this is, if you are spending even as little as 3 to 5 dollars a day on average, which I recommend you do, I recommend that if you have, depending on what kind of a store you have. There are certain things that people are not searching for actively. In that case, AdWords does not make sense for you if you are selling a product that people are not searching for. If you are selling a product that people are searching for, then AdWords is amazing! Even if you are selling a product that people are not searching for, there are great ways to use it. Let me give you an example. At B Dancewear, we sell dance clothing. People search for a pair of blue high waisted booty shorts or whatever it is. When people search for that, I want them to come to my website and know that they are ready to buy. So, by paying $5 a month just to start – I spend much more money. I spend a few thousand dollars a month on average. But if you expect anywhere from $5 a day to start, it helps give you a little bit of motivation to go in and fix what is not working with your website. Because people come to your website and they are not buying, that means there is probably something wrong with the website. So light a little fire under your butt and get your AdWords done.

So, what is AdWords you might be wondering? I am hoping you kind of already know. But, if you don’t, here is a quick overview. AdWords Google is a PPC advertising platform. It is Google’s PPC advertising platform. “PPC” means “paid per clip.” That means that you pay every time somebody clicks on your ad. And, then, when they click on your ad, they come to your website. You are paying for people to come to your website. You bid on key words using AdWords. There is also product listing which we will talk about in the next module  and display advertising which I will not talk about too much because I do not think it makes sense in ecommerce. But the way that the generic AdWords worked and the way that it originally worked was that you bid on specific cues. So, I might bid on something like “dance shorts.” So, anytime someone types in dance shorts into Google, I want my ad to show up because I know that every time someone is searching for dance shorts, they are looking for a pair of dance shorts. Now this is an example of a not so great keyword. Someone searching for dance shorts in Google, they probably not ready to buy yet. A much, much better one would be “blue, high waisted dance shorts” or “buy high waisted dance shorts.” That is much more specific. So, you want to look at their intent because I know someone searching for dance shorts. If someone is looking for something, are they looking to view pictures, are they looking to just browse, or are they looking to buy. AdWords allows you to target people who are looking to buy something. So, keep in mind this is why Google is a multi-billion dollar company. They make 99% of their money off of advertising. A lot of it comes from AdWords.  So, this is a very, very powerful tool. It is probably one of the most powerful advertising tools that have ever been created.

In this module, we are going to talk about a lot of different things regarding AdWords. In fact, the first thing I am going to do is show you a step by step walkthrough of AdWords to get you familiar with the platform. Then I am going to show you a basic campaign set up. I am going to show you how to set up a campaign. After that, I am going to have a lesson for tips for optimizing up your AdWords and this should lead to some good things on how to make it so that you can save money – how to make it so that your ads will do better than your competitors’ ads will. I have a whole bunch of tips on how you can optimize your AdWords.

Lastly, I am going to do a BingAds walkthrough. BingAds are not as good as Google ads for a lot of different reasons. But, here is the secret. You can basically copy your Google AdWords over to Bing and it is extra traffic for you. There are some different tweets that you will want to do within Bing but, it is basically a free extra source of income. If you can get Google AdWords to work, then BingAds will work really well for you.

So this is what this module is about. I am really excited about it. I hope you can tell, but you guys will learn a lot from this and hopefully you will start setting up your AdWords ASAP.
