How to Increase Sales through Email Capture

Today I am going to share to you some tips and tricks on how you can use email capture to make you more money on your ecommerce website.

Before we talk in-depth about email capture, here are some things that I would like you to keep in mind:

People don’t buy on their first visit.

They want to come back and they want to get familiar with it. But, obviously that is not always the case. Some people do buy on their first visit but majority of people do not. So, those people that come to your site, and they leave they may never come back again. But, one of the benefits of having email capture is that you can make them come back because they give you their email in exchange for something like a checklist or a DIY guide, etc.

You’ve got to give to get.

No one wants to give away their email for nothing. They want to give it away in exchange for something like a gift, a 10 percent off, a pdf. Basically, you have to give away something to get something which is their email. Now, you do not have to do anything so crazy.

In my Bdancewear.com website, you can see there a scroll box which pops up when someone scrolls down in my website. What I am trying to say is that if you are in my website, which sells dance clothing, then you probably are interested in dance costumes. What we do is that we offer a guide on how you can DIY your own dance costumes.

The trick here is that in our DIY guide, it uses our clothing, our base pieces but it will show you how you can take our base pieces and make them into amazing dance costumes. So, 95 percent of people that come to our website are interested in something like this.

All of you have to do is convince your web visitors to give you their email so you can give then the guide. Then, what we do is that we use these emails and we try to make them come back to our website. If they do not buy from us, we give them a coupon. We email them and tell them openly to come back to us. So, your free gift can be a couple of different things. Some ideas I have for you are the following:

Checklists– I know a lot of people who have been making success in giving away travel packing checklists.

Ebooks– there many online marketers who use this (e.g. SEO Guide ebook)

Videos – e.g. a Six Part Video Course

Discounts– e.g. I’ll give you a ten percent discount coupon now all you have to do is sign up here for an email offer.

Contests – e.g. it could be something like – “one out of a hundred people who signed up here is going to get a free product.”

Just Do It
Just put up some kind of email capture and then you can insert a hidden blog post. (This is what I did) Mine was a blog post about “7 ways to DIY Your Dance Costume”. It was just a page on my website that was hidden and that you can only get to it if you sign up for my email. In it we list down all seven ways on how you can DIY your dance costume. There is nothing special to it. In fact, it only took me like two or three hours to type up that blog post, not that hard to do. I recommend that you start doing this right away.

Some Email Capture Tools that You Can Use

Sumo Me
This is a little bit of Javascript snippet that you can put on your website and it automatically adds pop-ups to your site.

Scroll Box
This is what I put on my website that as people scroll it will pop up.

List Builder
It is a box that pops-up in the middle of the screen.

For example, in my blog I use two email capturing tools, I don’t just pick and choose one because my goal is to get them to my main website and second is to get their email.

Now, on my main ecommerce website, I do not like the pop-up in the middle because it takes away from conversion and this is the reason why I preferred the little scroll box because I feel like it is not too intrusive. But, of course some people may disagree with me, but you can do it any way you want.

Get Klaviyo
Klaviyo also has pop-ups. If you want to sign up for Klaviyo, send me an email travis@effectivecommerce.com. Klaviyo can be a bit pricey so if you interested in signing up for Klaviyo, feel free to contact me.

MailChimp
You can also start with MailChimp. With Klaviyo the first 250 are free. But, with MailChimp the first 2000 is free. Depending on what kind of ecommerce site you have Klaviyo might make more sense or MailChimp might be more helpful for you. Klaviyo is a lot more advanced while MailChimp is pretty basic. Try to figure out which of these two is right for you.

My DIY Guide Story

Why I decided to go for a DIY Guide?

I do not give away discounts on my site. A lot of people like to give away discounts. They give away ten percent off coupons. I do not want to condition people to think that they can get discounts.

It has links to our YouTube Channel.
One thing that’s cool about our DIY Guide is that it is a pdf which has links to our Youtube Channel. It is a pdf where each section has a link to our YouTube Channel. They can see there some links which will take them to a YouTube video. Some links will also take them back to our website. So, they have this pdf book that reminds them constantly of us. It’s not that they get it and then they walk away.

It builds authority and fosters relationships.
As they read that pdf it reminds them how awesome our company is. Another reason why I preferred the DIY guide is that it builds authority and fosters relationships. It’s like our way of telling them that we have been in business for a while and that we know what we’re talking about. We are your trustworthy source. It definitely helps reiterate the fact that you know what you are talking about and that they should come and buy from you because you are the leader in this area.

Every week, I always come up with a new video so if you do not want to miss any of it subscribe to our You Tube Channel – Effective Ecommerce. For more tips and tricks for your online store, check out our free online store success pack.
