Launching a Kickstarter/Online Store in 30 Days – Day 3

This is Day 3 of my 30 Day Challenge.  I have a bunch of new updates. Obviously, we are only on day three so I do not know how far along I should be, but I am pretty happy. I am pretty happy with what is going on.

So, the first little tidbit – I whipped up two new batches right here. This is the first one. I changed up the formula. It is a little bit creamier in texture. It is a little bit hard to see with all of the lighting. This second one – you can see the little speckles in there – I tried playing around with chia seeds. The problem is my food processor could not grind them because the chia seeds are too small. I wonder if I put them in first if I would be able to do it. I might try out chia powder instead. That is a whole new conversation.

So, what else did I do. I had lunch with a friend that happens to own – it is a company called Barnana which does very well. There are in a lot of Whole Foods stores. It is in a space that is kind of similar to what I am in, a food space. Not only does he own this company but he is someone who is in my target demographic. This is huge. I think a lot of people think a lot of people who own companies do not meet with people who are in their target demographic. He is the type of person who would buy my product. He is very healthy, into the ketogenic diet, into hiking and camping and hunting and doing all of this stuff where my product would work perfectly for him. We had a great conversation and I learned a lot about what is important and what is not important. One of the things that I know but it is good to hear again I, for instance, you know what. I am getting a little hung up on the formula. As you can see, I have two new test batches. But at the same time that is probably not as important as I think it is. What I mean by that is I do not have to have the perfect formula. As long as it is pretty good, and trust me it is pretty good at this point, people will be happy with it. It is a lot about marketing. I mean, think about Coca Cola. Coca Cola is not a great product. I mean it is sugar water. But, they have such great marketing that people drink it all over the place. An even better example might be diamonds. Diamonds are pretty much worthless. Why do people pay so much money for them? Because of the marketing. When I say they are worthless, if you do not believe me, Google it. Actually, diamonds are not really that rare. They are actually pretty common. But, because of the marketing and because one company pretty much has a monopoly on them, they hold back a lot of the diamonds and do not let them trickle into circulation.

So, those are some of the good things I learned. I also had some other ideas. One thing I did was I took notes. So anytime you meet up with someone, I really highly recommend that you bring a notebook. It is a lot more flattering than typing in your phone. When I meet with someone and I am talking with someone and all of a sudden they start typing on their phone, part of me is thinking, “Are they sending someone a text message?” If you are writing by hand, I think it sends the message that, “Wow, that was really valuable information. Thank you.”  You also look like you are more engaged.

So, I have a bunch of notes here. I will read off some of the things – One of the things that I did not really think about with my product was – and I still have not released all of the details yet, but going after people who are hunters, especially like the higher income hunters. I am probably not going to be doing the people in the middle of the U.S., the white trash style people. That is probably not my target demographic. My target demographic is going to be the hunters that have a decent job, they have a little bit of money because I am doing a higher end product, obviously. Some other things he talked about were Reddit  and StumbleUpon. Which is not really something I had thought that much about but I think it will be really good for me. You can actually submit articles to StumbleUpon so I definitely am going to be doing that in the early days of marketing.

He also suggested I just think about the five top sports and that people in that industry would be interested in buying my stuff. I thought about that and one of the first things that came to mind was obstacle course racing. That might be something where people would be interested in it. Obviously, I thought about crossfit and some of these other ones. The tough mudder type people. So, that was another thing he gave me.

I am going to be doing this in individual pouches as opposed to glass jars. I wasn’t sure how many should be in a box. One piece of advice that he gave me was look at what the competition is doing. It is funny because that is usually what I tell people – look at what the competition is doing. But, sometimes you kind of forget that. So, it was good to meet with him and get that reflection. So, that is what I have been doing so far on Day 3.

The other thing that I have been doing is just calling co-packers. Now, I want to buy a domain name and the problem is that the name I want, the domain name is already taken. But I am pretty serious about this company and it is going to be $1,000 for that domain name. I think I am probably just going to bite the bullet and do it. We will see. He was saying just buy the .co. I do not know if I want to do that. I think I want to do the .com. I am going back and forth. Maybe I will buy the .co first and then later down the road buy the .com. Just so no one is sitting on it. I feel like it definitely seems a lot better if you have the .com than the .co. Even if start with the .com I eventually buy the .co and forward it there.

So, those are some of the things that I am working on right here. Like I said calling a bunch more co-packers. Last time, Day 2, I think I was a little happier with my progress there. I called a bunch of them did not get back to me or they were not able to accommodate what I was doing.

So, that is it for Day 3. I was just thinking about this in the shower, actually. I think Day 4 is going to be time to get the formula nailed down. Maybe Day 4 or Day 5. The Mason jars are 16 oz. I want to get some sample 8 oz. packs. Start selling them even. Maybe just sit outside Whole Foods. Go to crossfit gyms and try to start selling them. Use The Lean Startup model. And, those 8 oz. jars I will use to send them out to Influencers once my product goes live. So, that is it for Day 3.
