Pinterest and Pinterest Ads | Effective Ecommerce Podcast #28

Welcome to the Effective Ecommerce podcast and in this episode we’re gonna be talking about Pinterest and Pinterest ads and how to use those for your Ecommerce business for your online business what’s the best way to use both of these and for anybody watching this on Youtube I am sporting some blu-ray blocking basically a glasses. So I know I look a little ridiculous but it’s late at night and I don’t want all the light to keep me up. So anyways before getting out any tangents let’s talk about Pinterest and why it works for Ecommerce.

 

What’s great about it what’s not great about it how to properly utilize it and before we get into this whole episode I do need to say I’m not the world’s biggest Pinterest expert I know enough to make sales from Pinterest I know enough I’ve used it before profitably but there’s definitely people out there that know more than I do about this. So if you’re a beginner to Pinterest or Pinterest ads this is the perfect podcast for you because I know just a little bit more about you and I can bring you up to speed pretty easily if you are an expert at Pinterest or Pinterest ads probably won’t learn anything new with this episode. So let’s get started how does Pinterest work and I think that’s the most important thing to understand is why do people use Pinterest how does it actually work and if you haven’t ever used Pinterest before the first step might be just to sign up for an account and poke around and see how it works I think the next step might be ask some of your friends ask people that know how Pinterest works but the quick synopsis of how Pinterest and Pinterest adds is how Pinterest is a platform works is it’s basically the users you if you have a Pinterest account are allowed to have a bunch of different boards. So an example might be recipes you might have a board that’s specifically about recipes and it could even be more you can do it about whatever you want my sister recently got married I was actually about a year ago and she had one Pinterest board that was just about wedding ideas and. So she’d go around on Pinterest any time and any time she was on the internet and she’d pin any image to that wedding board that seemed like it would be good idea for her for her wedding.

 

An example would centerpieces she might pin different centerpieces ideas going back to the recipes just let’s say someone’s about to try out the paleo or ketogenic diet for the first time they might go around and pin different Pinterest or different images around the web different recipes to their board now on Pinterest itself you can search it’s a search engine as well. So you could search for Paleo recipes and you can see the most pinned Paleo recipes and usually these are pretty you know they’re visually appealing and it’s just they’re meant for Pinterest a lot of times when you search on Pinterest obviously. So that’s what Pinterest is and what it’s really used for now some quick tips one is that the way Pinterest works and you have to really see it is long images do better than wide images and it’s because the formatting issues it only shows it shows a maximum width on Pinterest where the length can be a lot longer. So that’s a little bit more valuable to when you click on a pin it’ll take you to whatever website is associated with that pin. So if you have let’s say for performance nut butter for instance I might make a pin that’s just about the product it just shows a picture of the product.
If people are looking to do the ketogenic diet and they need a pin different ideas for their diet there might be performance nut butter and they just pin that product and when they click on it it would take them directly to my product page I wouldn’t have it go to my home page I’d have it go directly to my product page. So that’s the quick version of how it could be beneficial or how Pinterest is used. So there’s a few different ways you can use Pinterest and one of them is directly put your products on there and this is probably the least effective way depending on what your product is but just putting your product up there doing some keyword optimization and we’ve talked about this in earlier episodes but remember Pinscher set the end of the day is also a search engine. So you want a keyword optimize it in any way you can and the ways you would do this is if you upload the image make sure it’s the file name is whatever keyword you want to rank for make sure the description of the pin has those keywords in it makes sure the final page that you take people to has those keywords in it all those fun things very it’s it’s still search engine optimization it’s just not for Google it’s for Pinterest instead. So you still want to do all those factors but the next part is making a something that’s pin worthy which means it’s got to be a good quality image and there’s a lot of different factors. So I’d say the first thing you could do is just posting your product up on Pinterest and asking people to pin it may be sending it out to your email list and saying hey make sure you pin this product there’s. So many different things you can do just there but I think that’s actually the least effective way to do it.

 

What I personally recommend for all my content all my social media is kind of what I call like a hub-and-spoke model. So for me the hub the main thing is Youtube video. So for B dancewear for instance we make it had a DIY a dance costume Youtube video then what we do is we convert that into an article we get someone a write an article about it and then we do a maybe an Instagram post about that though we haven’t really been doing that recently but the other main thing we’ll do is a Pinterest pin about it and what happens is we. So let’s say it’s how to how to rhinestone a dance costume well do a video but then we’ll also get someone to do a Pinterest pin and but we may even take separate photos for our Pinterest pin and it’s step one two three four five and we’ll do it from top to bottom like lengthwise rather than widthwise of the different steps and when someone clicks on it what I used to have it happen is when someone clicks on it it would take them to our website and it would take them to an article about our about an article about the exact process of how to rhinestone a dance costume and that worked alright it got a lot of people to our website but it didn’t get a lot of people purchasing I looked at the numbers and people just weren’t buying from that method. So what I did instead was basically have it go directly to an email capture and what I found was around % % of people would sign up for that email capture. So that worked a lot better.

 

Basically I said here’s a pin about how to rhinestone a dance costume and then when they click on it it would say free  page DIY dance costume book and people would sign up but their email in there and then I would start the email marketing sequence and I think either we talked about that in a previous episode or that’s an episode coming up soon. So and for reference I talked about my Youtube and how to do Youtube videos in episode 29. So check that out if you haven’t already. So that’s what I do for be dance we’re currently the others a few of the things I do as well because I found out that we get a lot of traffic to Pinterest or from Pinterest another thing I did was just upload all our products and then not only all our products but I uploaded them with different keyword variations. So I do something like pink high-waist and shorts red high-waist and shorts blue highways dangerous and do a different photo for each one. So you might want to do something like that with your product an example of this might be with performance nut butter I only have one SKU I only have one product I might upload a pin and might upload a picture of performance nut butter and show it in a way that makes it look perfect for the ketogenic snack as a keto snack then I might upload and how would I do this I don’t know I’d take a photo of a guy that’s really fit or a girl that’s really fit holding it then maybe I do another photo of performance nut butter in like I don’t know some fields or something like that and say paleo snack and in the description in the title say paleo snack and change the image of it and upload it a few different times. So that when people search for paleo snack they find it when people search for keto snack they find it all these different ideas. So that’s that’s a little bit of what I do for B dance where is these different products and also like a hub-and-spoke model where I’m giving them a DIY pin and that does really well like I said we get thousands of people pinning our pins and it’s kind of some cross promotion because once they sign up for the email we send them the DIY guide and we let them know about our Youtube channel and just kind of like cross-pollination going on right there the next thing I want to talk about is how I plan to use this for performance nut butter because I feel like these two companies are. So different that it kind of covers a lot of different space. So performance nut butter only had one product and you might think at first past performance nut butter doesn’t lend itself very well to Pinterest but there’s a few different things I’m gonna do obviously as I already mentioned I will post different pictures of performance nut butter with different keyword tags different images etc maybe you know perfect marathon snack perfect marathon fuel and shows someone running a marathon holding it and eating it things like that the next thing I’m gonna be doing is recipes. So for performance a nut butter I can do recipes lengthwise and I have to do more research because I don’t use Pinterest a lot I have to do more research on the exact proper structure of this but what I would do is a recipe in pin form and then when someone clicks on it it takes them to a landing page where it says put in your email to get our free top  keto recipes people put in their email and then I know if if they’re putting their email in for that but they’re on the ketogenic diet. So I know to send them emails about how great of a snack performance nut butter is and all the recipes in the book will be using performance nut butter. So that’s another thing I would do the third and last thing I would do is maybe make videos very similar to how I did for be dancer but using. So I might do a video for instance on seven top keto snacks and then I’d turn that into a pin and then when someone clicks on it it would you know I’d figure out what some kind of a lead magnet it would take him to. So I do again a hub-and-spoke model. So every time I do a Youtube video for performance not butter top seven keto snacks number one secret to staying in ketosis seven paleo snacks and then like different all those different you know things that I can think of I’ll also do it as a Pinterest pin. So what have I learned from all of this one don’t I mean it’s up to you you can drive people to your products page definitely don’t drive them to your homepage driving them to an article may or may not work but I think the best-case scenario is to try to get the email from Pinterest because with that you can keep remarketing to them you can do all kinds of really good stuff that’s my personal opinion I’m sure there’s other people out there that would disagree with me on that. So test it for yourself see what works for yourself and when you’re doing a pin what I recommend doing is you can always  redirect it. So you can always change the URL you can always change things like that. So it’s not a big deal just do something put something up there the the next thing I would say is let’s talk about a little bit about Pinterest ads and how they work and I’ve spent a few thousand dollars on Pinterest ads once again I’m not an expert there’s other people out there that probably have a much better idea on how to do this but I have tested a lot and it doesn’t seem like people on Pinterest are ready to buy right away. So it’s not always the best idea to try to sell them on your product you can get really cheap clicks you can get clicks to your website for ten cents I think the better way to do it is how people normally use Pinterest and trying to get their emails. So what I mean by this is I might have a pin such as how to rhinestone dance costumes and I might promote that pin and then try to get emails and then it’s a long game that’s the long game approach and I haven’t had the patience to do this as well as I should with be dancewear because for me if I spend a dollar I want to see two dollars in return right away and that doesn’t always obviously work. So the way there’s a few different ways Pinterest ads works and I think it’s even evolved since I’ve used it but one of the things you can do is you can bid based on keywords. So I could say anytime someone types in dance shorts show my dance shorts pin which when people click it it takes them to our website and I have done this and you made a little bit of money but overall it wasn’t worth it to continue to do it you can use keywords I forget what other options there are currently you can go in there and start exploring it I think they also do ones where it will show it to people based on their interest and that could be a little bit dangerous but it’s worth checking out. So I’m not gonna talk too much more about this topic. So I can already tell that I don’t know as much about this as I’d like to and if I don’t know as much about this as I’d like to my goal is to get an expert on here. So in a future episode what I will do is I will have an expert on here to talk about Pinterest and Pinterest Ads but hopefully this is just a quick preview of what what to know about pincers what to know about pincher SADS hopefully it gets the gears turning in your head and I’d recommend as soon as possible at least get up a few pins because it doesn’t take very much effort to get up some Pinterest pins and it can lead to some really big results and one of the things I’m planning on doing for performance nut butter is obviously Pinterest but I’m probably to spend a good month or. So focused on this this specific platform and maybe maybe a little bit of other social media platform.
