5 Steps to Designing a Killer Home Page

The Home Page is extremely important. It is the number one page that people land on when they come to your website. But, how do you make one that will surely make your web visitors get hooked to it and never leave right away? Below are five easy steps on how you can create a killer home page.

1. Create a Static Clickable Banner

The banner should have a clickable link. Most ecommerce sites have banners on them and most of the time people will tend to click on them, so make sure that your banner is clickable. Some websites have banners that slide between different ones but then based on my research static banners do better than those that slide. But, if you think that sliding banners do good for your website, let me know under the comments section.
It is also in the banner where you will display your USP or Unique Selling Proposition. For example, my website is all about hand- made clothing from USA, so I made sure to put hand made from the USA on my banner. What makes your product unique or special? Make sure to put that on your banner. It is also in your banner where you will highlight your best selling products, special promos and discounts.

2. Display Your Best Selling Products

Display your products on your home page. What products do you have are more likely to become best-sellers? Go ahead and display them on your homepage. Based on experience, the products I placed on the home page were the ones which I found to be the highest-ranking products in Google. The products that you put in your home page will create an impression among your target market that those are the most important products that they should buy. Therefore, if there are certain products that you want to be ranking high in Google, it is recommended that you put them on your Home page.

Another reason why you should display your products on your home page is to make the entire buying process so much easier to do. Remember the key principle of an ecommerce store – the less clicks, the less work one has to put in purchasing something, the better.

When your web visitors know that the products they usually need are just displayed on your home page, they just go directly to your home page, click an item and then buy. By having everything they need on the home page people will no longer have to do a lot of navigation to the other pages of your website, then you can expect that more and more people will buy.

3. Post Text that Increases Traffic

The text on your Home Page has two reasons. First is for SEO purposes and second so that your web visitors will have something to read.

Google loves words. When people notice that your website only has images on them, they can immediately tell that you are just selling something and this increases your site’s bounce rate. To reiterate, Google loves words and they read words more than images.

A lot of people who read the Home page will also want to know more about your company and your products. This is why it would also be wise to put your About Us section on your Home page.

Make sure as well to put fresh text. In my website where I sell dance wear clothing I see to it that it has a fresh text each month regarding “Dancer of the Month”. Does your product have a unique story worth-sharing? Then make sure to put that on your Home Page. For my website, what we do is encourage people to submit their images showing the clothes they wear which they bought from us. So, we put them as our Dancer of the Month. One big advantage of doing this is that the word of mouth marketing becomes a very effective strategy.

4. Display Your USP

Your USP must be displayed on your Banner. You can also display it on other areas of your site such as your About Us section. Your USP should be obvious that people don’t have to dig deeper to your website just to be able to know what makes your product or business unique and special. If people will fail to notice that your site has something special for them, they will have greater tendency to just go to Amazon or any other websites and buy products from there instead of purchasing from your website. Make sure that people will immediately realize that your website is something special.

5. Create Trust

One of the best ways to create trust is to post videos on your Home page. Another way to create trust is to make those phone numbers visible on your website. This way, people will know right away that they can call you. Putting customer testimonials is also one way of establishing trust with your target market. You may choose to have your customers’ photos with a short blurb beside it as their testimonial. If you are selling pills or health products it would be best to have people in authority talk about your product. You can have videos of doctors talking about your product so that people will also know that your product really works.
As an ecommerce website, your aim is to make people buy from you. Therefore, you need to build trust with your website visitors early on so that you will be able to earn more conversions. In other words, more people will actually buy products from your website once you are able to establish trust with them.
