How to Optimize Your Category Pages For Your Online Store

 

In this lesson we’re going to talk about category pages and how you can optimize your category pages but before we do you have to understand something about these category pages category pages only have one job they don’t make you any money there’s no one that’s ever made a fortune just from their category pages the job of the category pages is to get people to a product the job of the category pages is to make it easy for someone to find the right product for them and ultimately buy it.

So how do you do this that’s a great question you need to make them easy to navigate you need to make it someone people go to your category pages they can figure out what product is best for them they can figure out how to move around all those kind of things it’s got to be easy to find that product if it’s if you’ve got a thousand products and they’re all basically the same but just slightly different and people have to click on one after another after another that’s no good that’s kind of a problem and I’ve ran into this problem myself I’ll talk about later in this lesson the issue that I was facing because my category page is really ugly but I did something that completely changed that that might be applicable to some of you. So the goal is to funnel your visitors into a specific product.

So what did I do well I have within let’s say dance shorts I have about eighteen between right around eighteen different dance shorts but the funny thing about it is they’re all just kind of very similar to each other for instance I have three different types of Dance Shorts a regular a booty short and a high-waisted short but within the high-waisted short have one high-waisted tour.

That’s like or one that’s shiny like or one that’s cotton one that’s velvet. So if I just had a big long list of all the different shorts I had it would look kind of like a jumbled mess. So what I decided to do was make it. So people would click what kind of short they want and then they click on what kind of fabric they want I made it. So it’s a very simple click funnel and as you can see here it says dance shorts pick your style below. So that’s the first step I made I told them hey pick your style first.

I didn’t just put up these images and leave it to their imagination I said pick your style then I made it once they pick their style they pick what fabric. So it said very blatantly pick what fabric you want now obviously this isn’t gonna apply to a lot of you but think through your from your customer’s perspective when they go to your category page how do they know which products right for them maybe another thing you should do is organize your category page. So the best sellers are on the top row if your bestseller is on somewhere in the bottom of the page especially below the fold people are never gonna go to it and it might actually lose sales rank as humans whatever is easier for us to find we’re more likely to buy and by putting that bestseller up there you might get more people that immediately say oh that’s exactly what I wanted let me buy that.
