Working with a Co-packer! | Starting a Kickstarter Day #6

In this video, I am going to show you Day 6 in my 30-day challenge in starting a Kickstarter and a Shopify store.  I have some big news – actually a number of things that qualify as “big news.” But let’s start with the most boring things first and work up to the more exciting things.

First, I continue to send out emails. In fact, I spent nearly an entire day sending out emails to a number of different people trying to get them to allow me to interview them on my podcast. If you remember from Day 5, the whole thing was about trying to make connections with these influencers so that when my product launches they will share it with people. I have kind of gotten them along for the ride.

No, I cannot wait. I am going to show my bigger news.  So, my more exciting news here is that I got some test samples. I am working with a Co-packer right now and I let him kind of be in charge of coming up with the flavor. I gave him some guidelines. I gave told him what nuts I want to  go into the product, what kind of taste I am looking for, a few other little things like that and this is what he came up with. So far, this is version two. It is not perfect yet though. I am going to put that over here. It is not perfect yet. It is needs a little bit of work. I sent him back some feedback. That whole process has been extremely interesting and I made some mistakes. So, I guess this is some big lessons learned. I sent him some products, some of the nuts and I do not want any sugar added to my product. I want it to be sugar free and one of the nuts actually had sugar with it. That is a huge oversight. Then, another issue is that I got it them as raw and he said that they were dry roasted on his end but there was a mistake made and he ended up grinding it before he dry roasted it. So, basically 10 pounds worth of nuts that I sent him is pretty much worthless.  What I learned from this is to double check everything and maybe order samples before you send it= I sent around $300 on nuts and of that $300, $200 of it was pretty much worthless. So, definitely be a little bit more careful. It is hard to balance out being overly cavalier and overly careful. You want to find that middle ground where you are still pushing forward but you are not being too slow about it. So that is some big things.

I also met with a friend of mine who owns (at 2:18) – you can go to their website if you want. They are in Whole Foods. They are a multi, multi-million dollar company. I am not going to share too much private stuff obviously but he is not only by ideal customer in the sense that he would probably buy the product, he likes the ketogenic diet, is very athletic,  all that kind of stuff but he also owns a food company. So, it is like mind-blowing how perfect this is. It was great sitting down with him. I got to bounce some ideas off of him, tell him about the product. He tasted it. He likes it. He definitely likes the samples. One sample that I whipped up in my kitchen, I personally like more and I think the liked it more as well. So, we are going to keep working.  So far, I have two versions of samples. I am going to get a third one.
